Sculptures at Heavens GateThe information board read:
The sculptures for this Millennium project are simple in shape so as to stand quietly in the special place. The sculptor Paul Norris worked on these stones for 2 years whilst living on the Estate and carved the stones inspired by his surroundings.
As Paul has stated "Longleat uplifts my spirit and I know it does many others that live and visit this part of Wiltshire. My idea was for the work to blend into the atmosphere of Longleat and to be part of its future. The sculptures are figurative in a animal way but are as much to do with the landscape as with animals. The granite stone I used came from Mabe in Cornwall and is extremely hard. Most of the hand carving was done in my workshop but the cutting and formation of the circular stone was completed at the quarry.
Heavens Gate is a magnificent place of beauty where people spend time absorbing the splendour of Longleat House and its Park. My intention was to convey beauty through emotion rather than attract attention by art. I hope that the sculptures will act as a greeting place rather than an attraction as they are set back from the viewpoint.
The Millennium was the end of one era and the beginning of another, which encouraged excitement and hope for the future. Longleat is so very special as it changes eith the times but holds on to its deep rooted history."

Steve Prefontaine illustrated on the program cover of the LA Times Indoor Games, 8 Feb 1974, at The ForumSteve Prefontaine illustrated on the program cover of the LA Times Indoor Games, 8 Feb 1974, at The Forum. He is depicted wearing the Oregon singlet that was superseded by a newer design beginning in January 1973 that had a green bar across the chest bearing the school name "OREGON." He graduated from Oregon in 1973 and he was racing as a member of the Oregon Track Club.

Pre most often ran the mile or two-mile event at winter indoor meets. At this meet he ran the mile, placing second at 3:59.5. The field finished as follows:

1. Tony Waldrop, North Carolina, 3:58.3
2. Pre, Oregon Track Club, 3:59.5
3. John Walker, New Zealand, 4:01.0
5. Len Hilton, Pacific Coast Club, 4:01.4

Besides being one of the few to ever beat Pre in a US race, Tony Waldrop is a member of the NC Sports Hall of Fame. In 1974, he was named ACC Athlete of the Year and won the Patterson Medal, UNCs highest athletic award, for athletic ability, sportsmanship, morals, leadership and general conduct. While at Carolina, he ran an unprecedented 11 consecutive sub-four minute miles in competitive races and in 1974 set the then-indoor world record of 3:55 (which stood until 2009 when Oklahoma State freshman German Fernandez finally surpassed his mark with a technically superior 3:55.02 with automatic clocking). He won the 1973 indoor 1,000-yard run and the 1974 indoor mile NCAA championships, six Atlantic Coast Conference tiles and a gold medal in the 1,500 meters at the 1975 Pan American Games. He appeared on the cover of Track and Field News twice in 1974. Waldrop received his bachelors, masters and doctoral degrees from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. He later became a professor in molecular and integrative physiology, and then the vice chancellor for research at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. He is currently Vice Chancellor for Research and Graduate Studies at UNC.

The first international awareness of John Walker was at the Commonwealth Games in Christchurch in 1974 when he chased home Filbert Bayi of Tanzania in the 1500 meters, which Bayi won in world record time. Sixteen years later, Walker raced again in the Commonwealth Games. In between, he was one of the world’s outstanding milers. He set a world mile record of 3:49.4 in 1975 to become the first to break 3:50 and in 1976 he won the 1500 meter gold medal at the Montreal Olympics (13:39.17), the third New Zealander to win that event. He also set a world 2000 meter record in 1976 in Oslo. He also competed in the 1976 Olympic 800 meter 2nd heat, placing 3rd, and in the 1984 5000 meter final, placing 8th with 13:24.46. Walker’s career was disrupted by injury and he had to miss the 1978 Commonwealth Games while politics meant he could not defend his Olympic title in Moscow in 1980. Walker returned from setbacks though and became the first to achieve the milestone of 100 sub-four minute miles. He was attempting to become the first 40-year-old to run a sub-four mile when injury finally forced a halt to his career. Walker was knighted in 2009 to become Sir John Walker. His personal bests: 800 - 1.44.92 (1974); 1500 - 3.32.4 (1975); Mile - 3:49.4 (1975); 5000 - 13.19.28 (1986).

Len Hilton anchored the University of Houston relay team that set a world record in the indoor distance medley relay in 1970. He won the AAU 1,500m/Mile in 1973 and 1975 and the indoor 3 miles in 1972. At the NCAAs he was third in the 1971 3 miles. His personal bests: 800m – 1:48.7 (1973); 1,500m – 3:36.4 (1974); Mile – 3:55.9 (1973); 2 miles – 8:35.6 (1972); 5000m – 13:40.2 (1972); 6 miles – 28:30.4 (1972). He placed 8th in the 4th heat of the 5000m of the 1972 Olympics with a time of 14:07.2. He earned a degree in engineering and served as vice president of operations with Kinder Morgan Energy and Enron Corp.; He died age 52 of pancreatic cancer July 4, 2000.

Arthur PageCambridgeshire Times, 4th August 1916

Arthur Page was my great-grandfather. He was killed at Delville Wood on the 20th July 1916, the twentieth day of the Battle of the Somme.

Arthur was a bakery labourer in Ely, Cambridgeshire, and grew up in the Waterside district. He was the father of my grandmother Phyllis Alice Page, my fathers mother. Arthur was a Serjeant in the 2nd Battalion of the Suffolk Regiment, and his medal record shows that he arrived in France on the 26th January 1915.

The 2nd Battalion spent their first winter and spring bogged down in the trenches of the Vierstraat area of Flanders, before being returned to Billet at Westoutre on 11th April. They spent the latter part of the spring building the network of trenches in the Ypres salient, and then on June 16th they were part of the force which attacked and consolidated its hold in V Wood and Sanctuary Wood to the east of Ypres. It seems that the Battalion came under what were the first prolonged and sustained gas attacks by the Germans on British troops.

During July they returned to billet in Ypres again, but spent the rest of the summer consolidating the hold on the splendidly named Spoil Bank and Bellyache Wood, again to the west of Ypres. In general, the 2nd Suffolks seem to have spent an uneventful 1915 in Flanders, with few casualties, except for one major incident when, on September 8th, the battalion sustained more than a hundred deaths trying to capture a crater in Sanctuary Wood.

At the start of 1916, they were moved south towards St Eloi, Arthur arriving in the area a few days after his brother Herbert, with the 4th Suffolks, had been killed there, although he probably had not received this news yet.

In June 1916, the 2nd Suffolks were removed completely from the fighting and returned to depot at St Omer for training in open warfare. They did not know it, but the Generals were preparing for the Big Push, designed to distract the Germans from their assault on Verdun. It would be known as the Battle of the Somme.

On July 1st, the first day of the battle, the 2nd Suffolks set out from St Omer for the Somme. They arrived at the front on July 8th, and were placed in reserve, and then on July 14th they were moved into the southern end of Caterpillar Wood, to the east of Albert. Not far off, on July 18th, the Germans attacked and, at great cost to them, overran Delville Wood and part of the town of Longueval. Two companies of the 2nd Suffolks were sent to support the counter-attack, and among them was Serjeant Arthur Page.

Shortly before first light on what would be a warm, sunny day, at 3.35am on July 20th, the Third Division of the British Army attacked Delville Wood. Chris McCarthy, in The Somme Day-by-Day, records that Early in the morning the Division made an attack on Delville Wood and village using 2nd Suffolks and 10th Royal Welsh Fusiliers. At 3.35 am the Suffolks advanced from the west, but the two leading companies were almost entirely wiped out. The Fusiliers went astray, and came under fire from a British machine-gun barrage, losing most of their officers, only to press home a fruitless attack.

The casualties in the 2nd Battalion were heavy, and among those killed in the attack was Arthur Page. He was 37 years old. It seems to have been a spectacularly foolhardy action: the two companies lost no less than ten officers in the attack, one of them, a Major Congreve, later being awarded a posthumous Victoria Cross.

Arthurs body was recovered, identified, and buried at Delville Wood cemetery in Longueval. We visited Albert in the summer of 2006, but I did not know about Arthur Page at that time, and so we did not go to Longueval. We will have to go back.

Arthurs widow Sophia was my dads Grandma Sophie. It is said that when she opened the letter telling her of her husbands death, she immediately lost her hearing, and was deaf for the rest of her life.

Tommy Hessert Optimistic About NJMP Race"As the big ARCA race weekend approaches, you might want to listen to “Coffee with Corky” on Thursday morning. Along with Donald Fauerbach, local driver Tommy Hessert will be the featured guest.
Tommy, who lives in Cherry Hill, won his first ARCA race at Iowa Speedway one month ago. He is driving the No. 77 Cherry Hill Classics Dodge for Cunningham Motorsports. Tommy said that he feels good about the 150-mile race at New Jersey Motorsports Park because the Cunningham cars did so well last year (1-2 finish) and because NJMP is his home. He knows the track well enough to instruct other drivers there. Besides interviewing “The Other Donald” and Tom Hessert live, Woodbury native Craig Goess is scheduled to call in at 7:30 a.m. Goess is the current ARCA-RE/MAX series leader."
